I am pleased to see you have responded to "Astroid Bunny" . I am her Grandad and was a regular visitor when she was in Hospital. IAs a result can endorse her account. She went into Hospital as an Informal Patient and this was the first time she had been away from Home without her Family. Virtually every time I visited she was threatened with being sectioned. I am not sure if this was official Hospital Policy or the the policy of the then Consultant but it was very upsetting and exacerbated an already stressful situation for a young Girl who already suffered from anxiety. I pointed this out to the Staff involved but it made little difference. This was our first involvement as a Family with an Eating Disorder Hospital and lets face it because of the nature of the illness it was never going to be easy. But I always felt that more could and should have been done to improve the situation for Patients, Visitors and Staff. There were many positives including an excellent School and a good kitchen providing decent quality food. Most of the Staff were kind and professional but a few (mainly unfortunately in Senior roles at that time) were quite off hand and impatient showing little empathy or understanding. This may have been down to staff shortages at the time with an over reliance on Agency Staff at weekends. The Hospital finally did succeed in sectioning her at the end of October following which I felt that some of her treatment was totally unacceptable and as a result she quickly deteriorated further. I am genuinely pleased to read the recent Patient review saying that music was used in the treatment room to help calm her during NG feeding and hopefully initiatives like this will continue to improve the treatment. There is a happy ending as in December 2023 my Granddaughter was transferred to another Hospital. The environment was totally different with adequate staffing levels, a more patient and tolerant approach and the treatment was more nuanced towards "encouragement and reward ". She quickly improved with Home Visits and Home Leave and was discharged over 6 months ago and is now at College doing "A" levels.. However it is bittersweet as her experience at Cotswold Spa has left her still feeling traumatised and as a result I think she will require further counselling.

I was on the adolescent unit at Cotswold Spa Hospital, from August 2023 until I was transferred in December 2023. Although many of the staff are extremely skilled and amazing and really helped me, my experience here was extremely traumatic and horrific. I had been unwell in the community for 2 years and was admitted here informally, hopeful that it would help. Almost immediately, when I struggled with completing my meals orally, I was threatened with NG feeds and Section, which made me extremely stressed and anxious. When I started to accept NG feeding, I was constantly being threatened with a MHA assessment almost everyday, and when I was eventually detained under Section 3, I had a very traumatic experience and got extremely unwell. The staffing levels were very low, so, although most of the staff that were there were so brilliant and helpful, there was just not enough of them, and I feel I was neglected here. I still have flashbacks, over a year and a half later, to the extremely traumatic situations that I was put through. I was constantly told that I was “too difficult” and “too complex”, and always being told these things made me lose hope that I would ever get better. I had to be transferred, as they didn’t have the capacity to care for me here, probably because of the lack of staff and the inconsistent MDT. I was there for almost 4 months, and I didn’t make any progress at all, in fact, I deteriorated by a concerning amount. I’m so thankful to the staff that supported me, however, this hospital did not help me at all, and I would not recommend it.

Such a good place that changed me for the better! This was my second admission, and I was not very hopeful that I would get better because of the length of time I was unwell and habits that were ingrained, but the staff really worked with me to turn my life around. I was here from April 2024- July 2024. When I was struggling at the start, the staff let me play music during my NG feeds which helped enormously, and they helped me devise a special plan to get back onto food again! Around the time I was getting back onto food, I received funding for the unit school. What I will say is it can take a while to get funding for the school, especially if you’re over 16, but that is not the fault of the school or the council, it’s just the way things work, so for me I had a bit of a wait, but that made getting into the school more exciting!! The school was like an escape for me and I really came out of my shell when I was surrounded by other people and teachers, it felt like a snippet of normality. I made some amazing friendships as my time went on, and staff are quick to grant you privileges once you are safe to do so, so things like unescorted walks are definitely on the table, bathroom privacy and more! The staff were lovely and really supportive, of course a few were questionable but thats to be expected with a staff of 50+ members, and complaints were dealt with really smoothly by the advocate. I found the therapy and all my sessions very useful, and at the end of school we had a prom thrown for us which was so lovely, I really enjoyed it because I was in hospital the previous year for my prom! It was such a lovely idea and us patients really loved it. I also loved how personal your care plan and meal plan is, RHERE is a lot of options that can be suited to your needs, which is a stark contrast to my last hospital, in which everyone had the same meal plan. And the bedrooms can be personalised and you get your own bathroom which is a definite plus. Finally, I just wanted to thank the staff for saving my life and working with me towards my recovery, I couldn’t have got better without Cotswold spa.

I was the first ever patient at this hospital, so my experience was somewhat unique! But overall the staff really did have the best interests of those suffering at heart. I feel thankful that I was able to help them learn and shape a service that exists today. I don’t think I made it easy! But mental illness isn’t easy- I certainly gave a fair representation of what was to come. I am now living a happy life as a 23 year old with a fantastic partner and whilst I wouldn’t say it was down to my huntercombe admission many many ago, that was not the units doing, it was that I was not willing to change. If someone is ready to recover I can see this being a very valuable service that I’m sure has progressed and gained experience since the day I walked in as the first of many patients to come!
