I sent this to Askham Hall twice and never received a reply. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal last night. The service was rather slow which I guess was the result of us sitting after the large group. I thought I would feedback on our wine experience. I enjoy wine but am not particularly a wine buff and would have appreciated the option of a reasonably priced house red and white which would have suited us perfectly. I honestly didn’t particularly appreciate being handed the huge book of wines which were overwhelmingly beyond the the price I would normally pay for wine (mostly in the £100s and up to £14750) and really didn’t mean much to me. A nice bottle of house wine to accompany the excellent food would have been perfect for us. There will be those who want the whole wine story and experience and are happy to pay 100s for a bottle but we are not in that camp and actually found it quite intrusive and off putting. A few well chosen house wines would have have helped make our evening. Best. Richard
extra Note: We selected a relatively hard to find lower priced £45 bottle from the wine list which we were subsequently told was not available but were presented with an alternative at the same price which was pretty mediocre at best. The wines were presented to tables around us by the sommelier at volumes which intruded on the ambience of the restaurant. In summary the food was very nice but we would not return because of the wine related experience. We also had water through our ceiling twice from the bathroom above both in the evening and the early morning however the staff handled this pretty well and we were happy to put this down to bad luck. Very disappointed not to have had a reply from the restaurant.

An odd experience. The rooms and common areas are very thread-bare, dated, and sparsely furnished. The restaurant was probably one of the best meals I’ve ever had (53 years). The grounds are quite nice.

Faultless from beginning to end. We had the most wonderful long weekend, phenomenal food and wine, perfect service, and an old-school timeless ambience that made us feel instantly at home. We walked for miles and miles every day guided by path recommendations from staff, came back to roaring fires and giant baths and thick blankets and felt more like we were staying with family than at a hotel. Please don’t ever change!

Rooms were cold, large gap under the door.|Not disabled friendly. We were there for a wedding and felt like we were rushed out of the wedding breakfast. |Saw the man (staff) who cooked the evening pizza, vaping and the smoke was going on the food!

Magnificent old building, a treat to stay there. Our room was spacious, comfortable and atmospheric with a view over the lovely grounds and beyond and a good sized bathroom. Being at the top of the building with no lift was a bit of a haul up though! Although mid June the weather was cold and the heating had been turned on which was very hospitable and thoughtful. The tasting menu at Allium was superb, we enjoyed all the dishes though 2 standout ones were the beef tartare which was so full of flavour and the lobster perfectly cooked (as opposed to half raw which seems to be the fad nowadays). An enormous wine list full of interesting wines at sensible prices.

A location to die for. Beautiful setting in Askham. The rooms were actually quite basic, with little comfort. We had no wardrobe for example and had to hang our clothes on hooks on the wall. The photos made the rooms look far more glamorous, andthey were more expensive than they should have been.
