I truly enjoyed this tour. So much history (good and bad) of African Americans in Jacksonville that I had no idea about. Yolanda is very passionate and knowledgeable about all the history of the city and you can tell she’s put in a lot of time, effort and love into this guided tour. When I visit Jacksonville again I will definitely bring others with me and do the tour again. PS I love the tour bus!!

Yollie, the delightful tour guide with Explore Jax Core, provided an engaging tour of the places and neighborhoods that played a significant role in Black history and culture in Jacksonville. She told us about great people that did great things. We learned about writer and civil rights activist James Weldon Johnson, anthropologist Zora Neale Hurston, civil rights leader Rutledge Pearson, humanitarian Eartha M.M. White and educator Johnnetta Cole. We visited the baseball museum at James P. Small Park, where the Jacksonville Red Caps of the Negro American League and Hank Aaron played before he became a Major League baseball star. Yollie took us through several historic Black neighborhoods and explained how the once prestigious neighborhoods were leveled to make way for highway construction, university expansion and urban renewal. Thank you, Yollie, for such an insightful tour. It was a meaningful highlight of our trip to Jacksonville.

This was an amazing Black heritage tour that featured the rich history of Black neighborhoods and luminaries who called Jacksonville home. Like every city in America, so much of Jacksonville’s rich Black history has been bulldozed or lost, so it’s incredibly important that this knowledge is being preserved and shared. Our whole family really enjoyed this tour and learned so much. And the golf cart vehicle was so comfortable!

The black history tour with Yollie was a phenomenal experience! I have been visiting family in Jacksonville for years but I had no clue about the wealth of black history that was all around me in plain sight. My parents, sister, and I went on the Explore Jax Core tour with Yollie and it was exceptional! We are all Jacksonville natives (my parents grew up on the Northside) and she gave us a wealth of information we’d never known before. It was wonderful to learn about the men and women who helped shape Jacksonville but are rarely heard about. Yollie painted a picture of the once beautiful neighborhoods of Hansontown and Sugarhill - areas of Jacksonville that are now gone due to “urban development”. The ride itself was very comfortable. The golf cart is equipped with fans and Yollie provided bottled water. If you find yourself in Jacksonville trying to find something cool and worthwhile to do, go on the tour-it was fantastic.

We just finished Yollie’s Black History Tour through Downtown Jacksonville, exploring LaVilla, Hansontown, Springfield, and other historic neighborhoods.
